REMNANT BEAUTY - PHOTOGRAPHS BY ROMAN LORANC

OPENING RECEPTION with Artist: Saturday, May 2, 1pm.
Roman Loranc is one of the most collected living photographers today. He was born in Poland in 1956, and immigrated to the United States in 1981. Loranc settled in California’s Central Valley for 20 years and has recently moved north to the Mt. Shasta region. Dramatic landscapes of Northern California are the subject of many of Loranc’s most popular works: a stand of native oaks in winter floodwaters, the geometric contours of agricultural landscapes, or the majesty of Mt. Shasta beneath a moonlit sky. “I think of myself,” explains Loranc, “as a regional photographer, but that does not mean the photography cannot be understood beyond the region… regionalism, born of an informed attachment, has universal appeal.”
Loranc operates a 4x5 Linhof field camera, shoots the majority of his photographs with a 210mm Nikkor lens and hand prints his negatives on multigrade fiber paper. The innate drama of the landscapes is reproduced through a variable split-toning technique. All the printing, spotting, and archival mounting are done by the photographer. His images are limited and prices rise quickly.
Roman Loranc’s work has been exhibited in many public and private galleries and was featured in the best-selling anthology, “Highway 99: A Literary Journey through California’s Great Central Valley.” His book “Two-Hearted Oak, The Photography of Roman Loranc” (Heyday Books, 2003) is an intimate portrait of California’s Central Valley region. The book is out-of-print and considered a collector’s item.
Loranc’s May-June exhibition, Remnant Beauty, at the Knowlton Gallery, will focus on the landscapes of the Central Valley and Mt. Shasta regions. Please join us at the Opening Reception, starting at 1pm, which will include a presale of Loranc’s forthcoming book, “Fractal Dreams.”
EXHIBITION DATES: April 28 - June 28 Gallery hours: Tues - Sat, 11 am - 5pm Or by appointment: (209) 368-5123
ROUGH SAWN - PAINTINGS OF HERITAGE BARNS

OPENING RECEPTION & BARN TALK: Saturday, July 11, starting at 1pm. Barns are a symbol of the agricultural heritage of California’s Central Valley; they are functional and beautiful and represent a way of life that is disappearing. Much of the history of a family’s farm began with the building of its barns. The barns featured in Rough Sawn are at least 80 years old; most are built from redwood, on crude footings with dirt floors. We know the history of many of these structures, but for others, the history disappeared with changing ownerships.
The Knowlton Gallery teamed up with the San Joaquin County Historical Society and Museum to record vintage barns of the Central California region. Over 30 barn paintings are featured in in this show. Many barns are sagging and collapsing, yet still retain a unique beauty. Others are still used as stables, to store hay and farm equipment, as places where laborers bunk, where walnuts are hulled, and as homes for mice, owls, and memories.
The paintings will be primarily plein air works. Artists include Joseph Paquet, Carolyn Lord, Kim Lordier, Kathleen Dunphy, Gil Dellinger, Chella, Janette Jones, Ann McMillan, Clark Mitchell, Marilyn Eger, Lucinda Kasser, and many others, working in pastel, oil, acrylic and watercolor.
EXHIBITION DATES: June 30 - August 22, 2009 Gallery hours: Tues – Sat, 11am – 5pm. Or by appointment: (209) 368-5123
A NECESSARY MADNESS - NEW WORKS BY KATHLEEN DUNPHY

OPENING RECEPTION & ARTIST'S DEMONSTRATION: Saturday, August 29, 1 - 4 pm
COLLECTOR'S PREVIEW, DINNER, & ART TALK: Monday, August 24, 6pm. $35.00. By Reservation (209) 368-5123
The Knowlton Gallery will be hosting a solo show of Kathleen Dunphy’s landscape and still life paintings, throughout the month of September. The show’s title, A Necessary Madness, comes from Dunphy’s belief that artists throughout history have been possessed with a necessary madness that drives them to paint. “It’s this happy insanity that makes up the world in which we artists live and one that is requisite to our creativity.”
For this accomplished Northern California painter, “Art has gotten into my blood, dulled my better senses, and possessed me with a passion that permeates everything in my life. It’s hard to go anywhere without taking my paints with me (just in case!) and the right light can make me hit the brakes and swerve off the road for a better look.”
Dunphy has been working for over a year on the collection of work that will make up this show. She is a busy artist who exhibits, not only in galleries from coast to coast, but also continues to enter many prestigious juried exhibitions. In just ten years, she has earned an impressive and growing reputation with galleries, private collectors, and art magazines across the United States.
A Collector’s Preview, Dinner, and Art Talk, will take place Monday, August 24, reservations are required. The Opening Reception, with a painting demonstration by Kathleen Dunphy will take place from 1 – 4pm, Saturday, August 29.
EXHIBITION DATES: August 25 - September 26, 2009 Gallery hours: Tues – Sat, 11am – 5pm. Or by appointment: (209) 368-5123/Robin@KnowltonGallery.com
WATERWAYS - LANDSCAPES FROM THE SACRAMENTO DELTA

OPENING RECEPTION, WITH ARTISTS PRESENT: Thursday, October 1, 6 - 8:30pm.
An all-star cast of painters will be featured in "Waterways", a show of landscape paintings of the Sacramento Delta Region. Painters include: Kim Lordier, Ray Roberts, Kathleen Dunphy, Dennis Ziemienski, Deladier Almeida, Gil Dellinger, Clark Mitchell, Randall Sexton, Terry Miura, Ann McMillan, Lucinda Kasser, Charles Waldman, and Chella.
California’s Sacramento Delta region encompasses over 1,000 miles of waterways and 52 islands. This convergence of rivers: the Sacramento River, the San Joaquin River, the American River, the Mokelumne River, the Cosumnes River, and the Calaveras River, empties into the Pacific Ocean through the San Francisco Bay. Along the way is a varied landscape of pear orchards, vineyards, marinas, bridges, small tumbling-down river towns, and rising above, the 3,849 ft. peak of Mt. Diablo. It is said that this area presents some of the best boating waterways in the country, if not the world.
The show will include both plein air and studio paintings, in oil, acrylic, watercolor, and pastel.
EXHIBITION DATES: September 29 - November 28, 2009 Gallery hours: Tues – Sat, 11am – 5pm. Or by appointment: (209) 368-5123/Robin@KnowltonGallery.com
