Rowland Cheney has spent the majority of his adult life teaching at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, California. Educated at Chico State and U.C. Berkeley, he has worked in a broad range of media and technique and is widely collected in bronzes, paintings, and prints.
Commissions represent the bulk of Rowland's work; most recently a monumental scale bronze sculpture entitled "Wisdom Through the Ages," for the City of Dublin. Other recent commissions include a bronze sculpture of Sandhill Cranes for the City of Lodi, and five Kiger Mustangs for the Breyer Corporation.
"One of an artist's primary gifts is the ability to reach to the heart of a matter through a combination of intuition, skill, and intellect. The choice of subject, style, material, and scale have a great deal to do with where the work is to be placed, who is going to see it, what message it is to send, and what it will cost. Art is communication, often on a non verbal level, where images are used to touch that part of humanity that helps us understand the essence of the artwork and to be uplifted by it."
The Knowlton Gallery has smaller scaled bronze sculptures of Roland's on display, as well as monoprints influenced by Native American Rock Art, depicting wild horses, bison, elk, and owls.
