Ray Roberts is a plein air painter, best known for his seascapes, figurative work, and majestic views of California and the Southwest.  His vibrant use of color, bold textures, and shifting patterns of light are signature elements throughout his work.

Roberts grew up in Orange County in the mid-'50s, before the days of freeways and sprawling housing developments. He attended Orme School in the Arizona desert where he discovered his artistic talent and developed a love of the Southwest. Roberts studied advertising and design at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California.  Roberts first pursued a career in illustration in Los Angeles and Scottsdale, until switching to fine art in 1992.

Ray considers Maynard Dixon his greatest muse, with whom he shares an admiration for the land and spirituality in his work. Other inspirations are some of the early California impressionists: Hanson Puthuff, William Wendt, and William Ritschel,

Roberts has been included in numerous group shows at the Haggin Museum, in Stockton, California, and has also been included in several museum and one-man gallery exhibitions throughout the country. As an artist, Ray has been awarded numerous "Best of Show" and "Artist Choice" awards and in 2004, Ray received the Gold Medal for "Best Painting" at the California Art Club's Annual Gold Medal Exhibition. Ray is a signature member of Plein Air Painters of America, the California Art Club, Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, and Northwest Rendezvous. He lives with his wife, the artist Peggi Kroll-Roberts, in the Sierra foothills of California.

When I go out to paint, whether it's on the coast, the mountains or the desert, I look for something that speaks to me emotionally, and try to get that communication across. I hope that people can share my vision through the canvas. My paintings are my footprints.
